Can you install a stone fireplace surround over existing brick?
Often yes. If the brick is structurally sound and reasonably flat, we can build over it and save you the demolition. If it’s bowed, or a projecting hearth interferes with the design, or the finished depth would sit too far into the room, we remove it first. We tell you which applies at the template stage.
What is the best stone for a fireplace surround?
Granite for most projects, because it’s dense, heat-tolerant and available in the widest range of colours. Soapstone if you burn wood regularly and want something that shrugs off heat entirely. Quartzite if you want dramatic movement with hard-wearing behaviour. Marble is beautiful but needs more care around soot and acidic cleaners.
Can you use quartz for a fireplace surround?
Sometimes, but not usually directly around a working firebox. Engineered quartz uses polymer resin as a binder, and most manufacturers restrict heat exposure in their warranty terms. We’ll show you where quartz can safely go on your project and where it can’t before you commit to a slab.
Will the stone crack from the heat of the fire?
Properly selected and properly installed natural stone handles fireplace heat. Problems come from the wrong material, from stone bridging a gap with no support behind it, or from ignoring the unit’s specified clearances. All three are installation decisions, which is why we template rather than estimate.
How much does a stone fireplace surround cost in East Tennessee?
It depends on the material, how much of the wall you’re covering, and whether existing brick has to come out. A hearth and a modest surround sits at one end of the range and a full height bookmatched feature wall at the other. Estimates are free and we quote in writing.
How long does installation take?
Most projects template within 48 hours of slab selection and install seven to ten days later. The installation itself is usually a single day for a standard surround, longer for a full height wall or a project involving demolition.
Do I need a hearth extension?
If your fireplace burns wood, almost certainly. The required projection depends on the size of the firebox opening and the unit’s own installation instructions, and local code applies. Gas and electric units have their own requirements. We build to the manufacturer’s specification for your specific unit.
Can you do a floor to ceiling stone fireplace?
Yes, and it’s one of our most requested fireplace projects. The main thing to understand is that slabs have a maximum height, so a nine or ten foot wall needs a seam. We either place it deliberately at mantel height or bookmatch the slabs so the seam becomes part of the design.
What is bookmatching?
Two slabs cut from the same block are opened like a book so the veining mirrors across the joint. On a tall fireplace wall it turns the seam from a flaw into the focal point. It only works if the slabs were cut sequentially, which is why we discuss it at selection.
Can you match my fireplace surround to my kitchen countertops?
We can, though we usually suggest relating rather than repeating. Using the identical stone in every room tends to read flat. Bringing us a sample or a photo of your existing countertops gives us something to work from.
Do you install fireplace surrounds for builders and rental properties?
Yes. Our trade desk handles general contractors, custom home builders, multifamily developers and short-term rental owners with volume pricing, Net 30 accounts and same-week templating. Cabin projects around Sevierville, Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg are a regular part of our work.
How do I clean and maintain a stone fireplace surround?
Warm water and a mild pH-neutral soap. Never acidic or abrasive cleaners, especially on marble. Wipe soot off rather than letting it sit. Natural stone should be sealed after installation, and we’ll tell you the sealing interval for the specific stone you choose.
