Introduction

Custom Stone Stair Treads, Cut to Your Staircase

Stairs are the one surface in your house that gets used with your full body weight, in the dark, sometimes in socks, sometimes carrying something. So they have to do two jobs at once. They have to look right, and they have to be safe underfoot.

Carpet hides a multitude of sins and eventually wears through. Builder-grade wood treads dent and squeak. Stone does neither, and a stone staircase is often the detail that makes an entryway feel finished rather than furnished.

Granite Depot fabricates and installs custom stone stair treads, risers and landings across Knoxville, Maryville, Johnson City, Sevierville and the surrounding East Tennessee area, for residential staircases, cabin builds and commercial entries.

FABRICATION

Every Tread Cut to Its Own Measurement

Staircases are almost never uniform. Walls bow slightly, treads vary by a few millimetres from top to bottom, and a set of treads cut to one average dimension will show gaps at the ends of the flight.

So we measure each step individually, then cut, shape and finish every tread in our own shop. Nosings are profiled, open ends get mitered returns so no raw edge shows, and the veining is laid out to run consistently up the flight rather than landing randomly step to step.

Finish matters as much as fit. Polished stone looks striking and is the least forgiving surface underfoot, so we usually recommend honed, leathered or flamed for treads. All materials are chosen for durability, grip and long-term performance in high-traffic areas.

INSTALLATION

Consistent Step Height, Start to Finish

Adding stone to a staircase changes the riser heights. Lay treads on every step but leave the floor at the top as it is, and that final riser is now shorter than the rest by the thickness of the stone. Code limits how much risers can vary within a single flight, and an inspector will catch it. So will anyone coming down the stairs in the dark.

We calculate the finished riser heights across the whole run before fabrication, then set each tread on a prepared substrate, bonded properly and levelled so every step lands the same. Exterior installations get materials and bonding rated for freeze and thaw, which matters more here than in most of the country.

Whether it’s a straight residential flight, a curved staircase or a commercial entry, the finished run should feel identical underfoot from bottom to top. Contact us today to schedule your stone stair tread installation and get results built to last.

“I had Granite Depot install new stone countertops and backsplash in my kitchen. Becca was wonderful through the process – the crew was efficient and completed the project in two working days – less than a week total. The countertops beautiful and everyone who visits loves to explore the crystalline structure of the stone.”

“Granite Depot is a phenomenal company! They go above and beyond to make sure the customer is happy, even if it means working in the snow because of our timeline. Rachel was our contact and she was extremely pleasant, meticulous and really stayed on top of the entire process. The installers did a fantastic job and sent pictures of their work afterward. I highly recommend Granite Depot.”

“I cannot say enough about Granite Depot of Sevierville and Adrian. I was in a bind needing a quick install and he went above and beyond to make sure that I got the stone that I wanted and had it installed in the time that I needed very professional and always kept me informed of what was going on. It was not a huge job, but they treated me just like if it were a huge job they had me installed in seven days. Highly Recommend Adrian and the Granite depot.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you put stone treads on an existing staircase?

Yes, and it’s most of what we do in this category. The main things we check are what’s underneath the carpet or old treads, and whether adding stone thickness throws off the riser heights at the top or bottom of the flight.

Yes, and this is the detail that causes problems. Code limits how much riser heights can vary within one flight. We measure the whole run, account for the stone thickness, and adjust the layout so the steps stay consistent rather than leaving one odd riser at either end.

Polished stone is. That’s why we recommend honed, leathered, brushed or flamed finishes for treads, all of which keep the look while giving real grip. We can also machine anti-slip grooving into the nosing where a project needs it.

Granite for most staircases, since it’s dense and handles concentrated foot traffic. Quartzite if you want dramatic movement with hard-wearing behaviour. Marble suits lower-traffic feature stairs better than a busy main run. For exterior steps, flamed granite.

Yes. Curved stairs and winder treads are each a different shape, so every tread is templated individually rather than batch cut. It takes more shop time, which is reflected in the quote.

No. Stone treads with painted wood risers is a common combination and considerably less expensive than a full stone staircase. It also reads lighter, which suits some entryways better.

Yes. Exterior work in East Tennessee has to survive freeze and thaw cycling, so we use dense stone with a flamed or thermal finish. We do not recommend softer or more porous materials for outdoor steps regardless of price.

Most projects move from fabrication to installation in seven to ten days. Installation itself is typically one to two days depending on the number of steps, whether risers are included, and site access.

Usually staples, gaps and construction-grade treads that were never meant to be seen. It doesn’t stop the job, but it can affect the quote, which is why we prefer to look at the staircase rather than price it from photos.

You can, and running the same stone through an open-plan entry and kitchen is a strong look. Just know that treads and countertops from different slabs of the same material will not be identical, since natural stone varies block to block.

The number of steps is the biggest driver, followed by whether risers are in stone, the material, and whether the staircase is straight or curved. Estimates are free, including in-home, and we offer a price match on comparable quotes.

Yes. Our trade desk handles general contractors, custom home builders, multifamily developers and commercial entries with volume pricing, Net 30 accounts and same-week templating.
