Hard Enough For a Working Kitchen
Around 6 to 6.5 on the Mohs scale, so it resists scratching from normal kitchen use. Use a board for your knives’ sake rather than the counter’s.
It Takes Real Heat
Granite formed from cooling magma. A pan straight off the burner will not scorch it, discolour it or damage it. This is the clearest practical difference between granite and quartz, where the resin binder is the weak point.

Does granite need to be sealed, and how often?
Yes, granite is porous and needs sealing. Frequency varies hugely between stones, so use the water test rather than a calendar. Pour water on the surface, wait fifteen minutes, wipe it off. If the stone darkened, it’s time to seal.
What do granite levels mean?
Availability, not quality. Level 1 granites are quarried in volume and widely stocked. Higher levels are rarer, harder to source, or in greater demand. A Level 3 granite is not more durable than a Level 1, it’s just less common.
Can you put hot pans on granite?
Yes. Granite formed from cooling magma and handles direct heat without damage. This is the clearest advantage granite has over quartz, where sustained heat can damage the resin binder.
Does granite stain?
Sealed granite resists staining well. Unsealed or under-sealed granite can absorb oil, wine and other liquids. Wipe spills promptly and keep the sealer current and staining is rarely an issue.
Does granite etch like marble?
No. The silicates in granite do not react with household acids, so lemon juice, vinegar and wine leave it alone.
Granite or quartz, which should I choose?
Granite for heat, UV tolerance and current value. Quartz for consistency and never needing sealing. Both are durable. The deciding factors are usually how you cook and whether the surface gets direct sunlight.
Are the pits and fissures in my granite defects?
No. Pits are natural gaps between mineral crystals and fissures are natural fractures along the stone’s structure. Both are characteristics of the material rather than faults, and neither affects performance.
What is leathered granite?
A textured finish rather than a polish. Its main practical advantage is hiding fingerprints and water marks, which makes it the answer for anyone who loves dark granite but not the smudges on polished black.
Is granite out of fashion?
Quartz took a lot of market share over the last decade, which is precisely why granite is good value now. It still outperforms quartz on heat and outdoor use, and the colour range is unmatched.
Do granite countertops emit radon?
This concern surfaced years ago and has been examined repeatedly since. Granite countertops are not considered a meaningful source of household radon exposure. If radon is a concern in your home, test the house rather than the countertop.
Can granite be used outdoors?
Yes, and it’s the standard choice. Granite handles UV, rain and freeze and thaw cycling, which is why it’s used for outdoor kitchens where engineered quartz cannot be.
Should I see the actual slab before you cut it?
With granite, yes. Variation within a single colour name can be significant, especially on stones with strong movement. We hold over 100 slabs across three showrooms.
