Frequently Asked Questions
Does quartzite need to be sealed?
Yes. Quartzite is porous to varying degrees depending on the stone, and sealing is standard practice. Anyone telling you quartzite never needs sealing is confusing it with engineered quartz. We seal after installation and tell you the interval for your specific slab.
Is quartzite harder than granite?
Yes, generally. Quartzite sits around 7 on the Mohs scale, above granite. It’s the most scratch-resistant natural stone we carry.
Does quartzite etch like marble?
True quartzite does not, because silica does not react with household acids. But a lot of stone sold as quartzite is actually dolomitic marble, and that does etch. If someone’s quartzite is etching, it usually isn’t quartzite.
How can I tell if a slab is real quartzite?
Two common tests. A drop of vinegar or lemon juice on an inconspicuous area will etch calcite-based stone and leave true quartzite alone. True quartzite will also scratch glass. Ask your supplier directly, and be cautious of a vague answer.
What is the difference between quartz and quartzite?
Quartz is engineered, made from ground quartz and resin. Quartzite is natural stone, quarried and cut. Quartzite is much harder and handles heat far better. Quartz is non-porous and never needs sealing. They are different products at different prices.
Is quartzite a good alternative to marble?
It’s the most common swap we make. Similar veined appearance, far harder, and true quartzite does not etch. It costs more than most marble, which is the trade.
Can you put hot pans on quartzite?
Yes. Quartzite formed under heat and pressure and handles it well. Trivets remain sensible practice but heat is not this material’s weakness.
Why is quartzite more expensive than granite?
Two reasons. The material itself generally costs more, and its hardness makes it slower to cut and harder on tooling, so fabrication takes longer. What you’re paying for is the same property that makes it wear so well.
Are the fissures in my quartzite slab a problem?
No. Fissures are natural fractures along the stone’s structure and are a characteristic of the material rather than a defect. They’re different from cracks. We point them out at slab selection.
Which quartzites do you stock?
Our floors change, but Taj Mahal, Mont Blanc, Fusion and Tempest Blue come through regularly, along with white and grey veined material. Call ahead if you’re after something specific and we’ll tell you which showroom has it.
Can quartzite be used outdoors?
Dense quartzite handles exterior conditions better than marble, but material choice for outdoor work in East Tennessee comes down to freeze and thaw resistance. Our outdoor countertop page covers what we recommend.
Should I see the actual slab?
With quartzite, yes. Movement can shift noticeably across a single slab, and on a large island that matters. We hold over 100 slabs across three showrooms.
