Introduction

Custom Stone Shower Surround Installation in East Tennessee

If you’ve spent a weekend on your knees with a grout brush and a bottle of bleach, you already know why people call us about shower surrounds.

Tile looks fine on day one. The problem is everything between the tile. Grout absorbs water, holds soap residue, discolours, and eventually cracks at the corners where the walls move. On a shower you use every day, that’s a maintenance job that never actually ends.

A stone slab shower surround removes most of it. Instead of hundreds of grout lines, you get large panels of solid stone with a handful of sealed joints. Granite Depot fabricates and installs custom stone shower surrounds across Knoxville, Maryville, Johnson City, Sevierville and the surrounding East Tennessee area, cut in our own shop and installed by our own crews.

SHOWER SURROUNDS

Full-Height Stone Panels With Almost No Grout

Tile looks good on day one. The grout between it is what you end up scrubbing. Our shower surrounds replace hundreds of grout lines with large stone panels and a handful of sealed joints, so there is far less holding soap residue and far less to maintain.

Every panel is templated against your finished, waterproofed walls rather than framing, then cut in our shop so the plumbing openings and corners land exactly where they should.

We handle:

  • Full-height wall panels, seams placed deliberately
  • Curb, bench, niche and jamb fabrication
  • Valve, showerhead and fixture cutouts
  • Sealed corner and edge joints for wet areas
  • Stone selection matched to daily shower use

The finished shower wipes clean and stays looking that way.

INSTALLATION PROCESS

Where Shower Installs Usually Go Wrong

Almost every problem we get called about traces back to timing, not craftsmanship. Panels templated over bare framing come back the wrong size. A valve moved after fabrication means recutting the piece. Walls that are out of plumb show up as a gap in the corner that no amount of sealant hides.

So we template against your finished substrate, after waterproofing and plumbing rough-in are done, and we check every wall for square before anything gets cut.

Installation includes:

  • Substrate check before we template
  • Exact valve and fixture positions marked on site
  • Panels cut and machined in our own shop
  • Wet-area sealant at corners and transitions, not grout
  • Joints, edges and stone sealed, then walked with you

If something upstream is not ready, we tell you before installation day, not during it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you install stone slab shower walls instead of tile?

Yes, and it’s most of what we do in this category. Instead of hundreds of grout lines you get large stone panels with a small number of sealed joints. Less to clean, nothing to regrout, and a calmer finished look.

The stone sheds water, but the waterproofing is the membrane or backer board system behind it. A correctly built shower has both. We install over properly prepared and waterproofed substrate, and we’ll tell you if what’s there isn’t ready.

It depends on wall height and slab dimensions. Rotating the slab so its long dimension runs vertically often gets you a full-height panel with no horizontal seam. Where a seam is unavoidable, we place it deliberately, usually aligned with a niche or bench.

Granite and quartzite for most projects, since both are dense and handle daily water exposure well. Marble is beautiful but etches from acidic products, so we recommend a honed finish if you choose it. We usually steer people away from travertine and limestone in showers.

In most standard showers, yes. If you’re building a steam shower, check the manufacturer’s warranty first, because several quartz brands exclude continuous steam exposure.

Natural stone should be sealed after installation, and the interval depends on the material. Granite and quartzite are low maintenance. Marble needs more attention. Engineered quartz does not require sealing. We tell you which applies to the stone you pick.

Warm water and a pH-neutral cleaner. Avoid acidic bathroom cleaners and anything abrasive, especially on marble. Squeegeeing the walls after use keeps hard water spotting down, which is the main thing people deal with in this area.

Most projects template within 48 hours of slab selection and install seven to ten days later. The installation itself is usually one day for a standard enclosure, longer if bench, curb and pan are all in stone.

Yes. The recessed pan and floor slope are structural work handled before we template, but they affect the stone layout at the threshold. Raise it at the consultation so those details get planned rather than improvised.

Both. A niche with a single slab back panel is one of the biggest visual upgrades available for a small amount of extra stone. A bench needs blocking and support planned during rough-in, so tell us early.

It depends on material, wall count and height, and which components you want in stone. A two-wall alcove sits at one end of the range and a full-height three-wall enclosure with bench, curb and pan at the other. Estimates are free and quoted in writing.

Yes. Our trade desk handles general contractors, custom home builders, multifamily developers and short-term rental owners with volume pricing, Net 30 accounts and same-week templating. Cabin bathrooms around Sevierville, Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg are a regular part of our schedule.
