Introduction

Custom Outdoor Countertops Services

An outdoor kitchen deals with things an indoor one never will. Six hours of direct July sun. Rain sitting on the surface. Grill heat a foot away. And every winter, water working into the stone, freezing overnight, and expanding.

That last one decides your material. At Granite Depot we fabricate and install outdoor countertops, bar tops and grill surrounds for patios, covered porches, lake houses and cabin decks across East Tennessee, using stone chosen to survive here rather than just look good on installation day.

FABRICATION

Precision Built for Outdoor Conditions

Every built-in appliance has a specified cutout in its installation manual. Grills, side burners, ice bins and access doors all differ, so we need your model numbers before anything gets cut. Choose the grill after the stone is fabricated and the piece has to be recut.

Outdoor runs are also longer than a slab, which means seams are planned rather than improvised. We lay your pieces out on the actual slab, place seams where they read as intentional, and match the veining across the joint.

Finish is fabricated in at this stage too. Polished granite throws glare and shows every water spot in direct sun, so we usually recommend leathered or honed for anything uncovered.

INSTALLATION

Outdoor Installs Start With the Base

Outdoor kitchens sit on block, metal framing or a deck, and that structure has to be built, square and level before we template. Measuring against an unfinished base is how tops end up sitting proud at one end.

Deck builds get one extra question. A run of three centimetre granite plus a built-in grill is real weight in a small footprint, so the loading is worth confirming with whoever built it before we cut anything.

From there we set and level each piece, support any bar overhang properly rather than letting the stone carry itself, close seams with exterior-grade materials, and seal the surface where the stone calls for it.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best countertop material for an outdoor kitchen?

Granite for most projects. It’s dense, absorbs very little water, handles grill heat and holds its colour in sun. Porcelain and sintered surfaces are the engineered alternative built specifically for exterior use.

We advise against it. Engineered quartz uses polymer resin as a binder, and UV exposure breaks that resin down, causing fading and discolouration. Most manufacturers exclude outdoor installation from their warranty, so damage is not covered.

Properly selected granite handles East Tennessee winters. The risk with outdoor stone is freeze and thaw damage, where absorbed water expands as it freezes. Dense, low-absorption stone resists it. Porous stone does not, which is why material selection matters more outdoors.

We do not recommend it here. Marble etches from rain, stains readily, and is vulnerable to repeated freezing and thawing. It’s a beautiful indoor stone and a poor outdoor one in this climate.

Dark stone in direct sun can. If your kitchen or bar is uncovered and faces south, we’ll usually steer you toward mid or lighter tones. Covered patios have far less of an issue.

Leathered or honed for most surfaces. Both handle water spotting and glare better than polish in outdoor light. Flamed for anything people walk on.

Yes. Every built-in appliance has a specified cutout dimension in its installation manual, so we need your model numbers before fabrication. Choosing the appliance after the stone is cut means recutting.

Often yes, but the loading needs checking first. Stone plus a built-in grill puts significant concentrated weight in one area, so that’s a conversation with whoever built or is building the deck before we template.

More often than indoors, since weather is harder on sealer than daily kitchen use. The interval depends on the stone and how exposed the space is, and we tell you what applies to your material.

Keep the surface clear rather than letting debris sit, clean with pH-neutral products, and clear the water lines if there’s a sink before the first hard freeze. If the material was chosen correctly, the stone itself needs no special protection.

Longer runs will, since slabs have finite dimensions. We plan seam placement during layout rather than letting it fall wherever the cut lands, and seal them for exterior exposure.

It depends on material, total square footage, layout, and how many appliance cutouts are involved. A straight bar run and a full U-shaped outdoor kitchen sit at very different ends of the range. Estimates are free and quoted in writing.
